|At Bristol Dojo our MMA program is suitable for people of all levels of ability. Some of our best students initially came to us with no knowledge so don't worry about not knowing enough - the classes are there for you to learn. We stress fitness and conditioning, but we do not demand that you already have these, and we are happy for you to achieve that as a part of training with us. Forget "getting fit" so you can train for a class, do both at the same time! All classes will teach you a combination of technique and conditioning. MMA training is for everyone regardless of your sex or fitness level and you can join in with our MMA training program at anytime.|
The term mixed martial arts or (MMA) usually refers a set of rules for combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques from a mixture of martial arts disciplines. MMA rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
At Bristol Dojo we have a fantastic facility for MMA with 30ft Cage Wall sections, 35ft padded combat wall, 55ft heavy kickbag rack , 18ft steel rope combat ring and 1800sq ft matted training area. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is broken down into four main elements, stand-up arts (striking), wrestling arts, ground fighting arts and conditioning training.
To be a Mixed Martial Artist you will need to train in several different arts and then merge them together to form your individual style. At Bristol Dojo our MMA training is based on K-1 Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Bjj).
At Bristol Dojo we have an excellent MMA coaching team consisting of ex-fighters who are well respected instructors in their individual arts.
K-1 Kickboxing - K-1 has a established itself as the most exciting form of kickboxing as it's been designed to produce a fast and exciting fighter. This class will teach you the most important MMA skill of how to strike and strike HARD! This class is taught by former national striking coach and ex national level competitor Simon O'Brien 6th Dan, Muay Thai coach Jonny Munden and Boxing Coach Dave Kennedy. It is based around partner drills, so you will learn all techniques with an opponent, either through pad work, sparring drills or through full sparring.
Muay Thai - another key MMA skill is how to work and control the clinch. Muay Thai will teach you these elements give you the confidence to work in close with your opponant and use your knees and elbows. This class is taught by Jonny Munden who runs one of the most successfull Muay Thai classes in Bristol.
Brazillian Jiu Jitsu - without doubt the best art for ground domination and submissions. When combined with the striking arts it produces a well rounded fighter.
The best palce to start as a beginner is to have a good base in grappling so our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class on Tuesdays and Thursdays should be your first choice. After that you should look to add a striking class such as our K-1 on Wednesdays or Muay Thai and also CageFit on Saturdays to help with fitness and conditioning.

We reccomend all beginners start in our Tuesday or Thursday BJJ Fundamental class first.
