Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi) - Adults

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is an art based in ground fighting. Along with this, it teaches takedowns, takedown defense, ground control, and especially submissions. Submissions refer to holds that either cut off an opponent’s air supply (chokes) or look to take advantage of a joint (such as armbars). At Bristol Dojo Bjj we have Beginners and Advanced classes avaialble. Our professor is Jimmy Johnstone who is a 1st degree Black Belt under Professor Fernando Terere and our coach is Simon O'Brien assisted by Dylan O'Brien and Andrew Chivers.

Gi and No Gi are the 2 forms of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gi Jiu Jitsu is grappling with the use of a traditional Gi, which allows you to grab the clothing of your opponent. No Gi is grappling without the traditional uniform, instead you wear shorts and a rash guard. In no gi you cannot grab your opponent’s clothing.

To be a complete BJJ player, you should train in both. Usually if you start training in majority without the Gi, then you will have a much harder time adapting to the Gi. The Gi in some ways is more complex with all the grips but No Gi has many other aspects which are not found in the Gi (for ex: more brabo chokes, guillotines, footlocks than in the Gi).

Bristol Dojo BjjOur Gi Bjj classes are split between two levels:-

Beginners Class - This is your starting point for Bjj, here you will learn the fundamentals of grappling, how to escape holds and how to do basic submissions. There is no sparring in this class but you will carry out training drills with your partner. Once you have spent 50 hours training you have the opportunity to move up or add the Advanced class to your training but you can stay in this class as long as you wish. Adavnced students often train in this class to brush up on their basics.

Advanced Class - this class builds on our beginners program and teaches higher level guards, submissions, takedowns and fight strategy. In this class you will do lots of sparring and is perfect for those who wish to compete in Bjj competitions.

All our Bjj classes are suitable for those who wish to study Bjj as a stand alone art and progress through the belt system or as part of our MMA program. You will learn techniques with the Gi (training uniform).

Through BJJ, you will begin to understand yourself, on and off the mats, in ways you never imagined. You will test your limits and become the best you can be. we respect that each student has their own goals and we support you in reaching them. The more you train, the better you will become and the more completely you will reach your true potential in life.Bristol Dojo Bjj

We are specialised in using the leverage of the body to move the opponent and take advantage of the opponent’s strength to use against themselves. The use of grips and the Gi is a very important weapon to develop the techniques. Dylan O'BrienIts possible to see the smaller controlling the bigger person. The option of fighting while on our back on the mat in such an effective way,  is something that separates our art from most other grappling styles.

The precursors of the art were Grand Master Helio Gracie and Carlos Gracie, whom later the former became one of the precursors of the today’s version of Mixed Martial Arts.

Technique is everything and although it helps to be fairly fit, you do not need to have done any other martial arts, be larger than anyone else, nor have large muscles to use these strategies and defeat your opponent.

At Bristol Dojo Bjj we also have an active competition team for those who wish to enter grappling events and have has great success at British, European and world level.
